Prof. Owens
Seminar in Finance Theory

Fall, 2008

This course is concerned with "issues" or concepts appropriate to financial management in both the non-financial and the financial context.  We will address six "issues" through lectures, research from external sources, writing papers on each topic and presenting your findings in class.  The following dates are the due dates for your papers and presentations regarding each of the indicated subjects.  The first date is my presentation on the general theory relevant to the topic and the second date is the due date for your paper and the timing of your presentation.

The following topics or issues are planned:

August 25:  Introduction

 Sept. 8 & 15
Theory of the Firm, Agency Theory and Creating Value
Sept 22 & 29
Capital Allocation Methods
Oct 6 & 13
Real Options and their application
Oct 20 &  27
CAPM & Efficient Markets
Nov 3 & 10
Capital Structure Theory
Nov 17 & 24
Dividends & Value Distribution

I am reserving December 1 as either a weather-related make up day or a review of the course day.  I plan to meet on that date but we will determine the topic at a later point.

Each topic will require a written paper of 5-8 pages in length summarizing the results and observations from your study of the related literature and thoughtful consideration of the subject.  Additionally, you will be asked to make a 5-7 minute oral presentation to the class concerning your research results and observations.   Papers should be typed in a Microsoft Word format and can be submitted as an e-mail attachment or in class.  You will find access to an intermediate or better finance textbook to be helpful and you should use the WT library although many of the journals will have to be obtained via inter-library loan so plan ahead.  Each paper and associated presentation will count the same value toward your final grade so plan on not missing these dates since late submissions are not acceptable and you cannot afford to lose that much of your semester grade per topic.
