OpenDNS at WTAMU

What is Domain Name Service(DNS)?
Domain Name Service (DNS) is a collection of databases that translate hostnames to IP addresses. DNS makes it possible to load a webpage in a browser using a domain name such as wtamu.edu.

What is OpenDNS(DNS)?
OpenDNS is a service that prevents users from loading malicious websites that distribute malware and viruses.

Why use openDNS?

Exploiting DNS has become a popular vector for network attackers
OpenDNS provides an extra layer of security to DNS by ensuring that all DNS traffic is coming from a secure, trusted source

WT VPN and OpenDNS

WTAMU’s VPN utilizes the Cisco AnyConnect OpenDNS Roaming Security Module. When you connect to WT's VPN:

  • The module installs alongside the AnyConnect VPN software client
  • Ensures DNS traffic is sent to a secure, trusted server
  • Offers continuous DNS protection, even when the VPN client is not connected to WTAMU
  • Encrypts DNS traffic for enhanced security in addition to blocking malicious websites
