Coffee with a Cop set for Oct. 4 at WTAMU

CANYON, Texas— The West Texas A&M University Police Department (UPD) is joining with the United States Department of Justice to conduct the second national Coffee with a Cop Day from 8-10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4 in the Jack B. Kelley Student Center, Legends. UPD will be joined by officers of the Canyon Police Department and deputies from the Randall Count Sheriff’s Office for this special event on campus. UPD badge

The innovative program was started by the Hawthorne (California) Police Department in 2011 in response to tensions between the police and the community. The idea has become a resounding success for police departments to have conversations with their communities. Today more than 2,000 law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve have participated in this program. In fact, Coffee with a Cop was highlighted in the Final Report of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing as a way to build community trust and confidence.

The WTAMU event is co-sponsored and supported by the Whataburger Corporation, the WTAMU Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the staff of the Jack B. Kelley Student Center.

Please join the Coffee with a Cop Day at WTAMU on Wednesday, Oct. 4 and become part of a national movement focused on building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Coffee, breakfast pastries and other treats will be provided.
