Faculty Members to Present at TSCA Conference

CANYON, Texas—Department of Communication faculty will represent West Texas A&M University at the annual conference of the Texas Speech Communication Association (TSCA) Oct. 4-6 in Corpus Christi. TSCA membership includes both college professors and high school educators from throughout the state.

Dr. Trudy Hanson, head of the Department of Communication, is the coordinator for student papers in rhetoric and communication theory. She will present the Top Paper Award for the Graduate Student Panel on Oct. 4.

Hanson also is participating in the Texas Association for Communication Administration panel with Dr. James Hallmark, vice chancellor for academic affairs for The Texas A&M University System. The panel will discuss current topics and challenges department chairs face in their communication programs.

Lacy Cannon, instructor of communication, currently serves on the nominating committee and the Educator of the Year committee. She has worked vigorously to bring the convention to Amarillo in 2019.

“We are looking forward to having the convention here,” she said. “I think that will allow more members to participate from WT and high schools in the local area. The local arrangements committee will work hard to welcome everyone to Amarillo and help the convention run smoothly.”

Carolyn Baum, assistant lecturer of communication studies, serves as the executive secretary for TSCA. After spending a year in training, Baum is responsible for recording all proceedings, membership reports, and convention materials. Baum will fill the role of executive secretary until her tenure ends in 2020.

Connie McKee, associate lecturer and director of forensics, also serves on two committees for the 2018-19 year. McKee is the chair of the special awards committee and is a member of the strategic planning committee. McKee was inducted into the Texas Forensic Association Hall of Fame in 2016 and named Texas Intercollegiate Forensic Association Educator of the Year in 2007.

Hanson and McKee are recipients of the TSCA outstanding service award and are both past presidents of TSCA. Baum, Hanson and McKee are lifetime members of TSCA. For more information, contact Hanson at thanson@wtamu.edu.
