WT Communication Faculty Member Awarded for Teaching Excellence

CANYON, Texas—Paula Schlegel, an associate lecturer in the West Texas A&M University Department of Communication, was awarded the Student Government Teaching Excellence Award at the 40th Annual All-University Honors Banquet.

“I feel blessed every day that I am in the classroom,” Schlegel said. “Receiving an award for doing something that I love was a wonderful surprise.”

Student Senate began the Student Government Teaching Excellence Award in 2015-2016 to honor outstanding faculty. This year, Student Government chose to honor Schlegel with the award because of her well-known passion in serving WT students.

“We have incredible students, and I enjoy getting to watch them on their journey through higher education,” Schlegel said. “I get excited when I can show them how the subjects that I teach are used daily in their real world.”

Schlegel served as the featured facilitator at the Spring Leadership Retreat sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership. She focused on the positive nature of failing—learning from failure.

Student Senate expressed appreciation for the entire faculty of West Texas A&M University for their dedication to all WT Students.

The award was presented at the banquet on April 27 in the JBK Legacy Hall on the WT campus. The banquet was sponsored by the WT Office of Student Engagement and Leadership.
