WTAMU Student Wins National Marketing Scholar Award


CANYON, Texas—Kimberly Hayes, an undergraduate marketing major at West Texas A&M University, is the recipient of the national American Marketing Association's prestigious AMA-EBSCO Marketing Scholar Award.

Hayes was awarded a tuition scholarship of $2,000, which will be dispersed to West Texas A&M University by the American Marketing Association (AMA) to be put toward fall tuition with the remainder given to the student. HayesKimberly Hayes also was recognized at the 39th AMA Annual International Collegiate Conference March 16-18 in New Orleans, La.

All of the more than 11,000 student members and 370 collegiate chapters of the AMA worldwide were eligible to apply for the award. In order to qualify, the candidates must have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and have a demonstrated leadership role within their AMA collegiate chapter. The selection process for the award was competitive.

“Ms. Hayes is an outstanding, exemplary student who well-deserves this award. We are very proud of her,” said Dr. Turkan Dursun-Kilic, associate professor of marketing, who supported Hayes' scholarship application and serves as a faculty adviser to the AMA Collegiate Chapter at WTAMU.

Hayes is a marketing student in the College of Business at WTAMU. She earned her associate degree in science/business administration with highest honors from Amarillo College in 2016. She had only an eighth-grade education until she earned her G.E.D. in 2013. Hayes has shown outstanding academic performance since starting at West Texas A&M University in the fall of 2016. She was named to the President’s List for fall 2016. Her outstanding academic performance and involvement as a student leader in the AMA Collegiate Chapter at WTAMU helped her win this national award..

“This scholarship means so much to me. With this scholarship, I feel myself getting closer to achieving my dream of one day being a business woman who is going to help other people make their dreams come true,” Hayes said.

The WTAMU Collegiate Chapter of the AMA was initiated in 2014. It aims to develop leadership skills of its student members and organize many professional development events such as timely seminars and presentations for students and community. Membership in the AMA is open to every major.

“Involvement in the AMA offers many benefits to our students such as scholarship awards, leadership opportunities, networking, seminars and conferences, free certificates and career management services,” said Dr. Syed Tariq Anwar, professor of marketing and international business, and co-adviser to the AMA Collegiate Chapter at WTAMU.
