WTAMU deadlines for application materials are generally one month prior to the scholarship program deadlines.  This allows time for campus committee reviews, foreign language evaluations (if required), letters of WTAMU endorsement and revisions to the final application. (Juniors are also eligible for some of the graduate level programs)

 The Amgen Scholars Program

The Amgen Scholars Program provides hundreds of undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on summer research experience at some of the world's leading institutions.

The Amgen Scholars Program has two main objectives: to increase learning and networking opportunities for undergraduate students committed to pursuing science or  engineering careers; and to spark the interest and broaden the perspective of undergraduate students considering scientific careers.

Amgen Scholars will: take part in important university research projects, gain hands-on lab experience and contribute to the advancement of science; interact with and receive guidance from faculty mentors, including some of the world’s leading academic scientists; and attend scientific seminars, workshops and other networking events.

Frank Huntington Beebe Fund for Musicians

Deadline for applications: 12/07/2009 (the application cycle opens in September of each year)

Provides fellowships to gifted young musicians, generally performers and composers in classical disciplines, to pursue advanced music study and performance abroad (usually in Europe). Fellowships are awarded to students at the outset of their professional lives and who have not spent an extended period of time abroad previously. The award is for one year and provides funding for round trip transportation, living and other expenses up to $22,000.

 Gates Millennium Scholarships

Deadlines for applications:

You should apply for the Gates Scholarship during your senior year of high school, if you have a GED or if you have never attended college before and will be entering as a full-time, degree-seeking incoming freshman in the fall.
Continuing Gates Scholars can apply for Graduate school funding in the fields of: education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health and the sciences.

Eligible students are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American and are a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or have earned a GED. All fields of study qualify. Candidates must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities •Students should also meet the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

Gilman Scholarships

Deadlines for applications: Summer and Fall programs: 04/06/2010

The Gilman International Scholarship program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). It provides awards of up to $5,000 (with a possible addition of $3,000 for studies in Critical Need Languages) to fund study abroad opportunities.  The program encourages candidates to choose non-traditional destinations outside of Western Europe and Australia or New Zealand.  Undergraduates from all academic fields who are U.S.citizens and receive Federal Pell Grants are eligible to apply.

Goldwater Scholarships

Deadlines for applications:  WTAMU: 1/15/2010; Goldwater: 01/29/2010

The Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,000 to outstanding Sophomores and Juniors majoring in mathematics, engineering, and sciences.  Students should have a strong record of research and clear potential to be future leaders in their fields. It is expected that candidates will pursue advanced degrees and careers in these fields. Students must be U.S.citizens, U.S.nationals or permanent residents with a minimum GPA of 3.5.

 Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP)

Deadline for applications: October 1st of the student's sophomore year

JAMP allows qualified, economically disadvantaged Texas students the opportunity to pursue a medical education. JAMP is supported by continuing appropriations from the Texas Legislature. If accepted into the program, students receive a scholarship each semester to attend undergraduate school starting from the spring of the sophomore year; stipends to attend summer internships at participating medical schools; mentoring and personal assistance to prepare for medical school; and admission to a Texas medical school if all program requirements are met.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Deadlines for applications vary by program and generally fall in late winter to early spring.

NASA offers a number of scholarships and paid summer internships for students with majors or academic concentrations in engineering, mathematics, computer science, technology, physical or life sciences and medical related fields.  Candidates must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at an accredited university.

NSEP/Boren Scholarship for Undergraduate Study Abroad

Deadlines for applications:  February 10, 2010

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S.undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S.interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealandare excluded.  Boren Scholars study less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili.  Candidates must be U.S.citizens, high school graduates or GED holders and enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. institution.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU)

Deadlines will vary by program.

ORAU is a university consortium comprised of 100 Ph.D. granting, major research institutions. These institutions are dedicated to the advancement of science and education. ORAU affiliates partner with national laboratories, government agencies and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) for the U.S. Department of Education. There are numerous opportunities for scholarships, internships and research experiences for undergraduates and graduates.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)

Deadlines for applications vary by institution and will generally fall in late winter to early spring.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds special research internships at host institutions through its Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.  Participating institutions may be in the U.S. or abroad.  Selected students gain valuable hands-on experience working closely with faculty and other researchers on specific projects.  Most internships also include opportunites to attend special lectures, research presentations and site visits. Programs generally run for 8-10 weeks during the summer. The host institution offers students a stipend and, usually, housing and a travel allowance.  Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of  the U.S. or its possessions and enrolled full-time at an accredited university.

SMART Scholarships

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be employed upon degree completion. It is part of the National Defense Education Program.

Truman Scholarships

Deadlines for applications: WTAMU: 01/15/2010; Truman: 02/02/2010

The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate study and leadership training. Students must be committed to pursuing degrees that will lead to careers in government, non-profit or advocacy, education or other public service sectors. Selected scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and at a Junior-level academic standing at the time of application. NB: The Truman Scholarship requires a strong record of leadership in public service on or off campus at the time of application.

Udall Scholarships

Deadlines for applications: WTAMU: 02/16/2010 Udall: 03/02/2010

The Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board (whichever is less). Students must have a strong academic record and demonstrated leadership roles in fields related to the environment or be from Native American or Native Alaskan backgrounds and committed to healthcare or tribal public policy. Candidates must be either Sophomores or Juniors at the time of application.

Fulbright Scholarships

Deadlines for applications: WTAMU 9/15/2009; Fulbright 10/19/2009

The Fulbright Program offers opportunities in all fields for graduate coursework, research or English language teaching in 140 countries. Grants are usually for one academic year and provide round-trip transport, language courses (as appropriate), tuition and fees, living allowance and basic accident/health insurance. U.S. citizens who are graduating seniors, hold a B.S./B.A. degree, are master's or doctoral degree candidates or are young professionals or artists are eligible.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship provides funding (tuition, living allowance, research or conference expenses, and RT airfare) to pursue either a second Bachelor’s degree, one year of post-graduate courses or research leading to a PhD. in any field at Cambridge University in England. Students must be U.S. citizens with an outstanding academic and leadership record, strong supporting references and clear reasons how study at Cambridge will further their long-term academic and professional goals.

The German Academic Exchange Service offers a broad range of grants and scholarships for undergraduates through faculty to study, do research and attend conferences in Germany.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowships

Deadlines for applications:  WTAMU: 09/03/2009; Javits: 10/03/2009

The Javits Fellowship provides up to 48 months of funding (tuition, fees and stipend) for students pursuing Masters or Doctoral degrees in specific fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences at accredited U.S.institutions. Candidates must demonstrate superior ability, outstanding achievement, exceptional promise and financial need (filing of FAFSA). U.S.citizens, nationals or permanent residents are eligible.

James Madison Fellowships

Deadlines for applications:  WTAMU: 02/04/2010; Madison: 03/01/2010

The Madison Fellowships provide a maximum of $24,000 (tuition, fees, books, room and board) and are intended exclusively for graduate study leading to a Master’s degree in one of the following fields: MA in American history or political science; MAT in American Constitutional history or American government, political institutions and political theory; MEd in American history, or American government, political institutions and political theory.  Upon completion of the degree, candidates are expected to teach American history, American government or social studies full-time in grades 7-12 for one full year for each academic year of aid received.  Fellowships are available for Junior Fellows (Seniors or recent graduates without teaching experience) and Senior Fellows (current teachers.)  Eligible candidates must be U.S.citizens or nationals and hold at least a Bachelor’s degree by August 31st of the application year.

Marshall Scholarships

The Marshall Scholarship provides full funding (university fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, RT airfare and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse) for 2 years (with a possible 3rd year extension) of graduate study at any British university or associated institutions.  All academic fields are eligible.  Candidates must be U.S.citizens and hold a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.7 at the start of the grant period.

The Rhodes Scholarship provides full funding (tuition, living allowance, travel to and from Oxford) for 2 to 3 years of study at Oxford University in England.  Scholars can pursue either a second Bachelor’s Degree or a Graduate Degree.  All academic fields are eligible, providing the course of study is available at Oxford. Graduating seniors or recent graduates who are U.S. citizens, ages 18-23 are eligible.

Soros Foundation Fellowships for New Americans

The Soros Foundation Fellowships for New Americans fund up to 2 years of graduate study at any accredited institution in the U.S. Studies in all professional or academic fields are eligible.  A New American can represent any national origin and is defined as a green card holder (resident alien), a naturalized citizen or the child of parents who are both naturalized citizens.  Candidates must be under the age of 30 at the start of the grant period.  Candidates must show strong evidence of originality, creativity, and leadership, accomplishments that reveal dedication and sustained efforts, and commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.
